History

Our story

Quantum Opus was founded on a simple principle:
The world’s most talented scientists should never be limited by their tools.

The seeds of the company were planted decades ago at Albion College, where founders Aaron Miller and Josh Cassada first began a lifelong collaboration in physics. In 2013, that partnership evolved into a mission. While Aaron was on sabbatical from his professorship and Josh was preparing for a career at NASA, they saw a critical gap in the quantum landscape. Identifying a commercial need for ultra-sensitive light sensors, they set out to build the world’s best superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) technology. They began initial fabrication at the University of Michigan, combining Aaron’s world-leading expertise in superconducting nanowires with Josh’s rigorous approach to technical challenges. What started in a Michigan lab has since empowered researchers globally to push the boundaries of quantum science, microscopy, and deep-space communication—applications we once only imagined.

Meet our Founders

Meet the people taking it one photon at a time.
Aaron J. Miller, PhD
Co-founder and President
Aaron is globally recognized as a leading authority in superconducting photon detector technologies. With over 30 years of expertise, Aaron is the technical heartbeat of Quantum Opus. Formerly a researcher at NIST and a professor at Albion College, his work in device design, electronics, and cryogenic systems is the foundation upon which our unmatched performance is built.
Josh A. Cassada, PhD
Co-founder and Head of R&D
Josh brings a mission-critical discipline to our innovation pipeline. After founding the company’s initial fabrication processes in 2013, he served as a NASA Astronaut for 11 years, spending over 150 days in space and conducting three spacewalks. A retired Navy Captain and test pilot, he rejoined the team in 2024, integrating high-stakes procedural methodology with cutting-edge physics.
Holly B. Miller, MBA
Co-founder and Operations & Finance
Holly ensures that our technical ambition is backed by rigorous operational excellence. With an MBA and an extensive background in public and private audit (formerly PWC), she manages the business complexities that allow our scientists to focus on what they do best: innovating.
